St. Joseph Mercy Brighton, Cancer Support Community and the American Cancer Society are looking for local volunteers to work with newly diagnosed cancer patients and their families by providing support and information on the multitude of free community resources available to them.

Volunteers need only a willingness to help and comfort level in working with cancer patients. Those interested are asked to commit to volunteering at least two times per month in half day increments.

To volunteer, contact Andrea Bridson, health initiatives coordinator for the American Cancer Society at 248.663.3512 or andrea.bridson@cancer.org to learn more. Following a short questionnaire, volunteers will be required to attend a one day training session to prepare them for their work in the Cancer Resource Center.

For the more than 57,000 people in Michigan who will be diagnosed with cancer this year, emotions will run high and questions will need answers. A newly diagnosed patient may need information about treatment options, talking to his or her family, or even understanding the complex medical system.

Anyone seeking additional information about the Cancer Resource Center can do so by calling 734.975.2500
