1 Dead in Crash on I-96 Near Wixom Road

A portion of the westbound side of the freeway was shut down on Saturday.

 

The driver of a vehicle was killed Saturday, after crashing into a camera pole on westbound I-96 near Wixom Road, according to news reports.

Michigan State Police told clickondetroit.com that a portion of the freeway was closed Saturday following the accident.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the driver was  taken for treatment by helicopter after they were ejected from a vehicle.

Car accidents were widespread across Metro Detroit Saturday, as snow squalls moved into the area around noon, causing slippery roads and whiteout conditions.

The death on I-96 is the only reported fatality from car accidents on Saturday.

Freeway closures due to car accidents included I-75 southbound at West Road;  US-23 northbound at Plank Road in Washtenaw County; and I-75 southbound at Lodge in Detroit. 

A crash that shut down the Southfield Freeway near Oakwood Boulevard involved as many as 13 cars.

It occurred after a semi truck jackknifed around 12:30 p.m., causing other cars driving on the snow-covered freeway to collide with it..
