7 Brighton Runners Brave Heat at Boston Marathon
Thousands opt not to run Monday as temperatures reached into the 80s.
With temperatures rising dangerously into the 80s Monday, seven runners from Brighton finished the Boston Marathon.
It was the second-slowest Boston Marathon race since 1985, as the unseasonable weather slowed the leaders and may have convinced as many as 4,300 entrants to sit this one out, according to a USA Today report.
Wesley Korir, a Kenyan citizen, won the marathon in 2:12:40. Fellow Kenyan Sharon Cherop won the women's race in 2:31:50.
A total of 22,426 runners started the 26.2 mile race – about 84 percent of the registered field of almost 27,000, with many of the no-shows expected to take race organizers up on their offer for a deferment into next year's race.
