Dingell, Clarke Blast Opponents and McCotter Resigns as Campaigns Heat Up

With the Aug. 7 election a month away, the campaigns for seats in the U.S. House and Senate are heating up.

With the August primary a month away, the campaigns for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate seats are heating up just like the Michigan weather.

This week several of the candidates made headlines as the Aug. 7 election approaches.

  • U.S. Rep. John Dingell, who is running for his 30th term in Congress, touted his experience and criticized his opponents in the 12th District race. “I never thought ignorance or inexperience was a qualification for running for office,” Dingell said in an interview with Dearborn Patch. His remarks drew sharp responses from the candidates for the Republican nomination, Karen Jacobsen and Cynthia Kallgren.
  • U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, who skipped Sunday’s 14th Congressional debate in Southfield, picked up a key nomination from the Fannie Lou Hammer political action committee and criticized an “opponent” for attacks on his heritage, according to the Detroit Free Press. Clarke has vowed to skip all the debates because of the “racist rhetoric” after he was accused of misidentifying his mother’s race. Clarke is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
  • U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra, a former Congressman, faces an accusation that he paid a felon to gather signatures to appear on the primary ballot, according to the Detroit News. Rival Gary Glenn made the allegations to the News. Hoekstra previously had denied paying anyone to gather signatures. In addition to Hoekstra and Grant, Clark Durant of Grosse Pointe, Randy Hekman and Peter Konetchy also are running for the Republican nomination.
  • Former presidential hopeful, turned lame-duck, Congressman Thad McCotter resigned from office Friday. According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, the Livonia republican said the past 6 weeks have been "nighmarish" for him and his family.

Dingell has served well at times, but he just isn't physically able to continue, and it's really his wife Debby who goes to all the appearances and runs the show. In the picture he's wearing a coat in July and his face looks as if he has had a stroke. Maybe he's got alot of good years ahead and can contribute in some way, but we need to get new blood in there. If he becomes incapacitated after the election, the Republican Governor gets to appoint his replacement. Think about it. Orville Hubberd stayed in power after a massive stroke. Do we want that to happen again? Whoever gets elected shouldn't have puppet strings attached.

Couldn't agree with you more, as he has no idea where he's at most of the time. His wife wants his job, and she is afraid to run for it, so she pulls his strings, and she dangels him around like Howdy Doody. She is so pompous with her glasses, hanging on her head, all he can do is say yes dear, and she continues to run the show foor him (his inner circle of friends say she is embarassing the poor guy, but he doesn't realize it). Its time to put him out of his misery bye bye Big John, its for your own good.
