Motorcycle Riders Airlifted to University of Michigan After Striking Minivan
Two riders from Howell weren't wearing helmets and were both critically injured in July 4 crash.
Two Howell residents were seriously injured when their motorcycle struck a minivan on July 4, according to a report from the Michigan State Police, Brighton Post.
Witnesses reported that the accident occured when the motorcycle attempted to pass the minivan which was attempting to turn into a private drive on North Territorial Road in Lyndon Township in Washtenaw County . The minivan was occupied by six college interns from the University of Michigan who did not report any injuries, according to the report.
The two motorcycle riders, neither of whom were wearing helmets, received critical injuries, according to the report and were air lifted to University of Michigan hospital.
Michigan State Police do not believe speed or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

You know we just did a self defense class at a rehab place and 5 of the 6 young men in wheelchairs are in them for the rest of their lives due to motorcycle accidents. The 6th was a car. This was before the helmet law changed. Now if they survive they may be in wheelchairs and add closed head injury to their list of problems if they do not wear helmets.

The changes in the law, regarding the wearing of helmets, is going to give the rehab facilities more business. But according to the powers that be, the change was made to increase tourism. Way to go Rick Synder!

Sorry, sassyme. These accidents with helmet-less riders, while tragic, were caused by the CHOICE the rider made not to wear a helmet. No law (or legislator) forced these individuals to forgo the use of a helmet. Common sense cannot be regulated.

Helmet opinions aside, I hope these riders will come out of this alraight. My thoughts are with them and their families, as well as the van occupants. Terrible thing to witness.
