This Week Marks the 108th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Seuss

Stop by the Brighton District Library to pick up one of your favorite Seuss stories.

"Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won," said Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to millions of adoring fans as Dr. Seuss. His cleverly woven stories, tongue twisting rhymes and whimsical characters delight children by entertaining, educating and teaching life-lessons.

Born in 1904 and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. Seuss attended Dartmouth College and become editor-in-chief of Dartmouth’s humor magazine, the Jack-O-Lantern. Upon graduation, he attended Oxford University in England but grew restless with academic life and left to tour Europe.

After returning from Europe, Seuss became a cartoonist for the Saturday Evening Post, worked for Standard Oil creating advertising campaigns and was a contributor to Life, Vanity Fair, Judge and other magazines.

His illustrations won him outstanding reviews giving him his first opportunity into children’s literature. His first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, was turned down 27 times before being published. His defining break though came with The Cat in the Hat, a children’s primer, which required him to use only 225 “new-reader” vocabulary words. The book became an overnight success establishing Seuss as a premiere children’s author and illustrator.
