What Are You Reading? Tell Us About It for a Chance to Win a Kindle!
We're assembling a list of summer book recommendations and rewarding one Patch reader with a Kindle just for helping.
What are you reading right now?
What did your kiddos finish reading last night?
Summer is in full swing, and so is the popular summer reading program at the Brighton District Library (have you helped your kids log their reading time yet? You have until Aug. 3).
We're continuing to build our 2012 Summer Reading Guide and looking for Patch readers to help. Post a comment with your reading recommendation; one commenter will be chosen at random on Friday to win a new Kindle e-Reader.
And, speaking of reading recommendations, Patch has put together (with the help of bestselling author James Patterson) a list of age-specific titles that you should check out.
- For preschoolers and kids through age 7: Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina and more.
- For kids ages 6 through 9: The Houdini Box By Brian Selznick and more.
- For kids ages 8 through 12: Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos and more.
- For tweens and teens: One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia and more.
If you like any of these, or have other well-loved books to share, tell us all about it.
Post a comment with your book recommendation (for kids or adults) by noon Friday, July 20, to enter.
A Patch editor will pick a winner at random; that winner will be contacted Friday afternoon and will have until noon Monday to respond in order to claim the prize. The Kindle we're giving away is the 6-inch version shown here.
The contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. And this wouldn't be a contest without a complete list of official contest rules.
What have you read this summer?

I have finished Room and The Hunger Games, both of which were great summer reads! I'm now reading State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, which was recommended to me by my mother-in-law. My daughters are reading 1984 and Pride and Prejudice for their English classes this fall at BHS. On a hot day like today, we plan to stay cool inside and keep on reading!

I'm reading "Crossed" by Allie Condie. It's the sequel to "Matched." A great YA read. It's a little less action packed than "The Hunger Games", but similar in it's setting of a futuristic dystopia. Loving it.

If you are a HUGE "Hunger Games" fan, you'll LOVE "Divergent" & "Insurgent" by Veronica Roth. They are the first 2 books in a trigology - third book will be out sometime next year. Could not put these books down. It's a dystopian novel set in Chicago where society is divided into 5 factions - each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). The story begins when a teenage girl decides what faction she will belong to - the one she was raisied in or will she choose another that is more "her," the choice surprises everyone, even her. The character, Beatrice/Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. Through her new adventures in her new fraction she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel the seemingly perfect society. This is a GREAT read for all ages from teen to adult! I cannot wait until the third book comes out.

I just finished reading "Once a Runner: A Novel" by John L. Parker Jr. I'm always looking for inspiration to keep me running. Apparently it's a cult classic among runners, having originally been published in 1978. It was a good summer read!

I am reading Barbara Bush; A Memoir. Barbara Bush endures as one of America's most popular First Ladies. She has won worldwide acclaim for her wit, compassion, and candor as both a presidential wife and mother. In this #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, Mrs. Bush offers a heartfelt portrait of her life in and out of the White House, from her small-town schoolgirl days in Rye, New York, to her fateful union with George H.W. Bush, to her role as First Lady of the United States. Here, she writes candidly about: her early years with George Bush in West Texas, the tragic death of her young daughter and the world of Washington politics and the famous figures she's met. Its a very interesting view into the people behind the politics.

I have been busy with a few titles this summer. I figured I would start by "geeking" out and reading some youth fantasy first in Rick Riordan's latest release "The Serpents Shadow", which is the third in the Kane Chronicle series. The book was a very easy read, and not only entertains, but also introduces readers to Egyptian Mythology at the same time. I then listened to 2 audio books on my long drive down south 1) Jeffery Deaver's "The Broken Window", and James Patterson's newest "I, Michael Bennett". "The Broken Window" was one in the series with character Lincoln Rhyme, who plays a quadriplegic ex-detective in the NYPD that helps to vindicate his cousin who was falsely convicted of murder. "I, Michael Bennett" is about a New York detective that attempts to convict a Mexican drug cartel king, and while awaiting trial finds that the convictee is still the one pulling the strings, even from prison. Both were great stories that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good read. I'm now on to Jeffery Deaver's book entitled "The Vanishing Man," another Lincoln Rhyme novel. This time the killer is an illusionist that is pulling off murders in very unique fashions. Also, just started Steve Berry's "The Jefferson Key". The latest in the Cotton Malone series of books. I love his writing..I own them all. His style of historical fiction is similar to something Dan Brown would write. Happy Reading!
