You don't want to start accumulating interest and penalties! For a list of free options to e-file your return go to IRS.gov. If you find you need more time to file your tax returns, you can get an automatic six-month extension from the IRS. Here are five things you need to know about filing an extension, according to IRS.gov. Brighton Merchants Defend Spending on Downtown Development

Merchants, Brighton city council, Downtown Development Authority and Principal Shopping Development are all credited with success of "thriving" downtown, according to DDA director.

Showing their support for the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and Principal Shopping Development (PSD), many of Brighton’s merchants attended Thursday night’s City Council meeting in response to budget discussions and concerns, defending the money spent to help develop and maintain the downtown area. According to the Press & Argus, Councilman Jim Bohn had previously expressed some concerns about expenditures in the DDA's recent budget, such as $60,000 on flowers and $40,000 for PSD efforts which include advertising and promotions. This spurred store owners to “respectfully and politely” express their opinions, according to Director Matt Modrack, that the DDA was an “unqualified success." Stating that he had “100 percent confidence” in…

Federal Sequester Means No Selfridge Flyover on Tigers' Opening Day

Flights at community events and the 2013 Thunderbirds' season have been canceled, according to the U.S. Air Force.

Detroit Tigers fans can keep their eyes on the field Friday during opening day. That's because Selfridge Air National Guard Base will not be participating this year in the annual flyover at Comerica Park. Potential federal sequester cuts have not only affected the beloved baseball flyover, they have also grounded goodwill flights during community events, including parades, trade shows, F-22 demonstration flights and more for the remainder of the 2013 fiscal year, according to the U.S. Air Force. "Given the current federal budget environment, the Air Force has stopped all aviation support to community events, to include our traditional fly-over of the Tigers' home opener," Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton, 127th Wing spokesman at Selfridge Air …

Brighton Patch Readers Discuss New Teen Cell Phone Law

Teens with a temporary drivers permit, or a level 1 or 2 graduated license, will be prohibited from using a cell phone while driving a car under a law that takes effect Thursday.

A new Michigan law, known as "Kelsey's Law" which prohibits teen drivers from using a cell phone while driving a car, goes into to effect Thursday. According to the bill signed into law earlier this year, if any driver with a temporary drivers permit or a level 1 or 2 graduated license - meaning any driver under the age of 17 - is stopped for a moving violation, he or she could be cited with a civil infraction for using a cell phone.  Because the violation is a civil infraction, local municipalities will determine the fine. The legislation was named for a 17-year-old Sault Ste. Marie girl who died in a car crash in 2010 while she was using her cell phone. Readers of the Brighton Patch Facebook page were asked about their thoughts of law.  …
