Get Inspired! Nature Writing Workshops at the Brighton Library

The Brighton District Library will offer a two-part workshop, October 19 and October 26 from 10:00 – 11:30 am for adults, teens and children that is based on the works of Henry David Thoreau, one of America’s foremost nature writers. This free workshop is sponsored in part by the Michigan Center for the Book and Brighton…Naturally, an environmental initiative to connect children, families, and individuals to the natural world.

The workshop titled Reading and Writing…Naturally, will offer participants an opportunity to discover the basic elements of nature writing and journaling, expression through book discussion, art through watercolor and nature sketching based on Thoreau’s work.

The adult and teen portion of the workshop will be led by local award-winning author Mike Ball and will include a book discussion of Thoreau’s book Walden followed by an outdoor creative writing exercise. Walden chronicles Thoreau’s communion with nature and has become a classic that is loved for its message of living simply and in harmony with nature. Interested adults and teens must register for both parts of the workshop. Registration begins October 5. Call 810-229-6571 ext. 227.

The children’s (ages 8-10) segment of the workshop will include reading Henry Hikes to Fitchburg which is based on the true adventures of Henry David Thoreau. The book follows two friends who take completely different paths to reach the same destination. Kids will discuss the book and decide who they think will get there first. Another element of the workshop includes nature journaling with local nature photographer and watercolorist Peggy N. Brewer. Brewer will show kids how to explore nature through watercolor and pencil drawing techniques. Registration begins October 5 and participants must sign up for both portions of the two-part workshop. Call 810-229-6571 ext. 223.

A Writers and Artist Open House reception will follow the two-part workshop, November 3 from 1:00-3:00 pm, and will showcase the work and art created during the Reading and Writing…Naturally sessions.  The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

The Brighton District Library is located at 100 Library Drive. For more information about Brighton…Naturally or the workshop Reading and Writing….Naturally visit brightonlibrary.info/brightonnaturally or call the Library 810-229-6571.
