Get Inspired! Nature Writing Workshops at the Brighton Library

The Brighton District Library will offer a two-part workshop, October 19 and October 26 from 10:00 – 11:30 am for adults, teens and children that is based on the works of Henry David Thoreau, one of America’s foremost nature writers. This free workshop is sponsored in part by the Michigan Center for the Book and Brighton…Naturally, an environmental initiative to connect children, families, and individuals to the natural world.

The workshop titled Reading and Writing…Naturally, will offer participants an opportunity to discover the basic elements of nature writing and journaling, expression through book discussion, art through watercolor and nature sketching based on Thoreau’s work.

The adult and teen portion of the workshop will be led by local award-winning author Mike Ball and will include a book discussion of Thoreau’s book Walden followed by an outdoor creative writing exercise. Walden chronicles Thoreau’s communion with nature and has become a classic that is loved for its message of living simply and in harmony with nature. A Writers and Artist Open House reception will follow the two-part workshop, November 3 from 1:00-3:00 pm, and will showcase the work and art created during the Reading and Writing…Naturally sessions.  The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.
