5 Ways to Celebrate the End of Summer

Searching for ways to help celebrate the end of summer? Check out some of these events at area metro parks.

As summer slowly winds down, here are five things to do at your local metro parks to help celebrate the final days.

1. Fun on the Farm

On August 22 at 10 a.m. at Kensington Metropark Farm Center, the program is especially for the little ones, and consists of story time, a craft and an activity. Children will get to visit with the draft horses, see how they get dressed for work, then go on a hayride.

2. Friday Night Canoe

On August 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Stony Creek Metropark, join an interpreter to paddle the 34-foot canoe to discover a bit of history and Stony Creek Lake life. This program is for ages 6 and older.

3. Dog Day 5K & Half Marathon Trail Run

On Friday, August 23 at 7 p.m. at the Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center, bring your best friend or your faithful pooch out for a run at the farm. Contact www.signmeup.com to register.

4. Harvest Festival & Corn Day

On August 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center, enjoy some good old-fashioned fun with something for everyone. Activities include locally grown produce available to purchase, candle dipping, chain saw carving, games, crafts, draft horse demonstrations, dog and goat agility, bounce house, corn maze and more. Vendors will be on site with their handmade crafts and art. Patrons can go on a wagon ride.

5. Bats in the Night Sky

On August 24 at 8 p.m. at the Hudson Mills Metropark Activity Center, join an interpreter in search of bats in the early nighttime sky! Explore bat life, behavior and conservation inside, and then head outside to see the bats that live here.
