Brighton AP Environmental Science students clean up lake

The juniors remaining in a senior-heavy AP Environmental Science class helped clean up Leith Lake behind the high school the week of June 2nd. Students used waders to go into the shallow water and clean up trash.  Other students walked the path around the lake and picked up litter left by other students, fisherman, and anyone around the lake.  After taking their AP tests, it allowed the students free time to do projects like this that help the school. It’s a good way to learn about the environment and then help clean it up.

“It’s really great that we’re out here doing what we can to better the environment. After all, that’s what all of this is about,” junior Alison Fiorini said.

The students involved with the clean up have used each day to smartly pace out the cleaning job, making sure nothing goes missed. John Rioux, the teacher in charge of the AP class has made it clear that he is more than pleased with the work his students have done.  The clean-up was attached to a letter grade as students identified living organisms as well as cleaned up the mess surrounding them.

“We wanted to do something active for the environment, something a little more productive.  The kids certainly found some interesting things out there,” Rioux said.
