Brave Volunteers Needed To Take the Plunge for Athletes

The Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics of Michigan will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 behind Brighton High School.

Adventurous Brighton area residents are needed to plunge into the icy water at Brighton High School on Saturday, Jan. 11 to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) athletes.

The Brighton plunge is the first of 30 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges happening all across Michigan in 2014.

Plunge registration is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. at Brighton High School. There will be a pre-plunge party, silent auction, family-friendly activities and registration. The parade of costumes and awards ceremony will begin at 1:45 p.m. in the high school gymnasium, with the party moving outside immediately following for the plunge.

With a crazy costume, a minimum donation of $75 and the courage to take part in one of 30 Law Enforcement Torch Run(r) (LETR) 2014 Polar Plunges, you can help us provide more athletes with inclusive opportunities. Brave individuals that are interested in taking the plunge can pre-register online.

This Polar Plunge is one of 30 Polar Plunges planned throughout Michigan from January through March 2014 in Alpena, Ann Arbor/University of Michigan, Belleville, Brighton, Caro, Cheboygan, Chippewa Lake, Clarklake/Jackson, Detroit, Edwardsburg, Fenton, Gaylord, Grand Rapids, Higgins Lake, Holland, Kalamazoo, Lake City, Lansing, Lansing Legislative, Macomb County, Marquette, Monroe, Mt. Pleasant, Muskegon, Saginaw/Bay City, Sault Ste. Marie, St. Clair, Sylvan Lake, Traverse City, Turk Lake/Greenville.

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (r) (LETR) Polar Plunge is known for its zany costume contest where plungers compete for the Golden Plunger Award. The award honors the plunger with the most creative costume or best jump into the water. All plungers receive incentive prizes and an official 2014 Polar Plunge T-shirt. Individuals who don't want to plunge can also collect donations to receive a T-shirt that bears the "Too Chicken to Plunge" logo.

The Polar Plunge is made possible by the Law Enforcement Torch Run(r), a group of police officers and corrections personnel committed to raising funds and awareness for SOMI.  Proceeds from the Polar Plunge support the year-round sports training and athletic competition for 19,613 children and adults with intellectual disabilities who live in Michigan.
