Brighton Volunteers Prepare For Possible Anthrax Attack

More than 200 volunteers spent their day pretending to be victims of a possible Anthrax attack in Brighton on Wednesday.

As part of a training exercise for the Livingston County Department of Public Health, a mock drill was set up that involved three separate, but fake, events in Macomb County had put Livingston County residents at "minimal risk."

For the drill, the Public Health Department was tasked with getting medications and treatment to more than 180,000 Livingston County residents within a 48 hour period, according to Health Educator Chelsea Moxlow.

Wednesday's training, held at Brighton High School, was the "end game" and final test for the Public Health Department in a training that actually began on Monday for Public Health employees.

"It's a scary situation to think about," Moxlow said, "but this helps us be prepared."

Guiding the volunteers through several stations during the mock drill, including paperwork, first aid and medication dispension, will help highlight problems or areas of concerns to their current system, according to Moxlow, and will help better prepare the department for the "worst case scenario."
