Where to Place Garage Sale Signs in Brighton

Signage, other than political signs, are not allowed in the public right-of-ways in Brighton and will be removed, according to officials.

The summer season of garage sales in Brighton is here and last week, a Brighton Patch reader asked a question regarding the removal of some temporary signs they had placed to help direct traffic.

According to Planning and Zoning Director Amy Cyphert from the City of Brighton, signage, other than political signs, are not allowed in the public right-of-ways will be removed.

"Typically, garage sales signs are placed in the public right-of-way, so the city has the right to take them,” Cyphert said.

Public right-of-ways include the space in between the sidewalk towards the street, according to Cyphert.

“If they’re placing outside of the sidewalk towards private property, that’s fine,” she said. “But they have to arrange that with the private property owner.”

In Brighton Township, according to the Township website, garage sales are only allowed on the day of the sale and also only on private property.

"Any signs that are placed on corners in a road right-of-way or at the entrance to subdivisions, will be removed," according to the Brighton Township website.

Several residents contributed to the discussion on the Brighton Patch Facebook page last week including Susan Fennelly who explained that her signs had been removed twice.

"I think it's crazy not to let us post small signs,” she wrote.
