How Bad Are Michigan Drivers? (It’s Not a Trick Question)

Choke on our exhaust Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and New York. But we might have a little Minnesota envy.

You might doubt it if you’re trying to get across Interstate 75 during a typical Motor City rush hour, but Michigan drivers rank comfortably in the Top 20 for their driving skills.

The best drivers are in Vermont, the worst in Louisiana, according to a new report released by CarInsuranceComparison.com, an auto insurance website.

The site's rankings are based on statistics pulled from several sources, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The insurance site looked at vehicle fatalities, drunk driving, tickets and the failure to obey driving laws.

Michigan finished 35th in the worst-drivers rankings, which means Mitten State drivers are above average.

We’re not as above average as Garrison Keillor’s home state of Minnesota, though. Like the children of fictional Lake Wobegon on his “Prairie Home Companion,” Minnesota drivers are above average – way above, with the fourth-best drivers in the country.

But Indiana, New York, Illinois and Ohio can choke on our exhaust with their rankings of 29, 22, 21 and 22, respectively, on the worst-driver index.
