LACASA Hosts Candlelight Vigil in Observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The 15th annual LACASA Candlelight Vigil will begin at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in downtown Howell.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

On Tuesday night, the Livingston Area Council Against Spouse Abuse (LACASA) will host its 15th annual "We Remember" event — a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of lives lost to domestic violence and celebrate the courage of survivors.

Participants will begin in a sidewalk procession at 6:45 p.m. at the northeast corner of Grand River Avenue and Center Street, just east of the Howell Carnegie Library. The candlelight vigil will follow at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater of the historic Howell County Courthouse.

The evening will include quiet reflection, stories and tributes to the victims and survivors of domestic violence as well as a performance from the Howell High School a cappella choir.

According to LACASA, 101,175 instances of domestic violence were reported in Michigan in 2010, and there were 89 women killed as a result. Sixty-seven percent of all assault charges in Livingston County in 2008 were related to domestic violence, the group said.

Nicole Matthews-Creech, LACASA community education director, spent Sept. 30 in downtown Brighton, tying purple ribbons around lampposts and trees and going door-to-door to local businesses, handing out informational cards.

LACASA representatives did the same in Howell this past weekend.
