They may not run the bases as fast as they did in their primes, but that doesn’t really matter.

You can tell by the cheers and laughter in the dugout that theHartland Senior Softball players, members of the Tri-County Senior Softball League, aren’t concerned about setting any records. Although they are very competitive, their primary objective is to have fun.

The real fun is the socialization with a collection of older senior citizens who still like to be active, who are active, and can do healthy things.

What started as one team looking for a pickup game has developed into the Tri-County Senior Softball League. The league consists of six teams from Hartland, Brighton, Fenton, Linden and  Milford. There are nearly 100 player participants ranging in ages from 55 to 75 having a blast playing softball. And, the league is looking at the possibility of adding a seventh team for the 2014 season.

All league games are played at the Tags Sports Complex in Hartland. Practices are on Mondays with games on Wednesday mornings.

The 2013 season consisted of a schedule of 15 regular season games, a post season playoff and topped off by a September golf outing at the fabulous Majestic at Lake Walden golf course.

Although the league is for seniors 55 years of age and older (men and women), the median age of the participants is closer to 65.

Socialization is a really important element. We are a team, not individuals. We cheer for and support each other. The whole synergy is in effect because we really try to help each other and enrich everyone's experience.

Anyone interested in participating can attend our next meeting on Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Hartland Senior Center.

They can also register at our web site, hartlandseniorsoftball.com, or contact Jim Wallace, League Coordinator, at 248-946-9192.
