Keep Summer around with this Handmade Flower Pencil

Try keeping your kids busy should rain keep you indoors.

No excuses here! This is one of the easiest crafts ever! And we all have the needed supplies at home: wrapping paper, pencil, glue, scissors, flower pot/glass/small vase. Yes, this is all you need to create a piece of summer that will make you smile, and it is useful, too!

Take your wrapping paper and cut the length first, I chose to go a little longer than pencil-length. The longer it is, the "fuzzier" your flower will be. Next, fold the paper in half lengthwise and then a second time. Now you can choose how long you want your "fuzz" to be. Cut the paper to this size.Β

Draw a line about the height of the metallic eraser part of your pencil, cut the paper above this line into thin strips. After this, apply some glue the part that is not cut, and wrap it around your pencil. You can secure the whole flower now with a piece of tape if needed.

This is the fun part: Pull your fuzzy petals down and apart and watch your flower come to life. I decided to display the flower pencil in a small terracotta flowerpot, which I have wrapped in the same wrapping paper that I used for the flower. To hold the pencil steady, I filled the pot with some bulgur, but rice, sand or dry beans would also work very well.

So - do you agree? Are there any excuses to not re-create this beautiful piece of summer? Maybe you are happy with your child's teacher - it would make a wonderful and appreciated teacher gift! Or birthday present for grandma...Β
