What happens to your body in a car accident?

Neck injuries occur by the sudden "whipping" of the head and neck. At 8 mph, the head and neck are exposed to forces 2 ½ times those of the vehicle. At higher speeds, the head and neck may be exposed to 4 to 10 times the car’s acceleration. If you want to experiment with this, hold onto a bowling ball while someone pushes you in the back. (Don’t do that, it will hurt).

This causes irritation to the nerves, muscles, ligaments and all the other tissues of the neck. People experience numbness, dizziness, tingling into their arms, shoulder pain and arm pain. Headaches, jaw pain and ringing in the ears are created by injury to the upper neck.

Low back injuries occur because the person travels up and down the seat during impact. Also, a seatbelt may save your life, but it can break ribs and your spine if you aren’t tall enough. Sciatica, hip pain and numbness are from the misalignment of the spine and hip created at impact.

Wrist injuries, Carpal Tunnel, arm and hand pain occur because the body moves while the wrist stays in one place. This pulls on the wrist, damaging the wrist, arm and hand.

Often times, the knees will hit the dashboard or under the steering wheel. The greater the impact, the more damage occurs.

This doesn’t even address the damage of airbags, side impacts, broken glass, roll overs or flying cell phones. Just imagine what could happen in those instances.

If you walked away from a car accident greater than 8.2 mph, you suffered damage to your spine. Regardless of how you felt. If you went for care and nobody took x-rays, how do you know if you are alright? If you felt sore and stiff a couple days later and did nothing about it, you may have problems in the future.

Just look and see what can go wrong from a "minor" impact.
