Joe Agius, owner of Burroughs Tavern, said he didn't even know that his restaurant was in the running until he was informed it had won for Best Local Menu.

"I'm very proud of it," Agius said of the award. "With all the jobs going outside of the United States, it was first and forefront to me to get as many Michigan products and local food sellers as possible. That American flag out there, we want to honor it - even that's made in the U.S."

Agius said that 70 percent of the food and produce served at his restaurant comes from Michigan and that everything is fresh except for shrimp and cod.

In addition, Burroughs Tavern has gotten away from using white refined sugar, substituting instead Michigan honey in foods like coleslaw and cornbread.

"We're using Michigan honey as our sweetener," Agius said. "We're taking it to a whole new level. Everybody keeps thinking that we're this barbecue and it's a fattening food restaurant. I have a $17,000 rotisserie smoker, so even our pork shoulders are coming fresh are rotated over 20 hours. The meat has about the same fat content as chicken because as it rotates, all the fat drops or melts off."
