Brighton's newest retailer Five Below offers a potential winning combination for young teens: Popular, trendy merchandise at prices they can likely afford.

Elizabeth Romaine, director of marketing for Five Below, said there's plenty of high-quality offerings at those low prices though. She said backpacks and headphones were available for $5, noting that those items would be pricier at other stores. Other deals listed on itsΒ website include $5 Wilson-brand sports balls and extra long Twizzlers packs for $2.99.

"We offer a lot of brand names in our store, brand names that teenagers and moms want," Romaine said.

To keep prices so low, Romaine said they take costs out of their business model in order to pass savings on to the customers, as well as buying up canceled orders made by larger retailers. On its website, the company lists other reasons, including not offering returns and buying directly from suppliers.

The other Detroit-area stores opening today are in Allen Park, Shelby Township, Orion and Troy, with a sixth location in Woodhaven coming in the fall.

The grand openings will indeed be grand for weekend shoppers. Free t-shirts will be awarded to the first 300 customers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be chances to register to win a $100 shopping spree and a cart selling hot dogs for 5 cents will make an appearance on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Each location will feature these events and many others, including sports mascot and radio station appearances. Here's a rundown for the Brighton opening:Β

  • 9:30 a.m. Friday -- Paws from the Detroit Tigers
  • 11 a.m. Saturday -- Roary from the Detroit Lions
  • 1 p.m. Saturday -- WKQI (Channel 955) Radio Station
