Patch Picks: 5 Summer Camps for Kids

Here are five suggestions for summer adventure in Brighton.

At this point in our Michigan winter, it's hard to believe the earth will ever thaw. But warm weather is coming and it's never too early to start planning for summer camp. With all the recreation opportunities in our own backyard, children don't have to travel far for a great experience. Here's a look at some camps in Brighton, and sign up early β€” spots fill fast:

  • Brighton Community Education: BCE will host more than 40 camps this summer, ranging from one day to five, that cover nearly every interest, from art, science, chess and cooking, to karate, fitness, animation, princesses, dinosaurs and even the dulcimer. Ages 3 to 16; $20-$459. Space is limited; registration begins March 25.
  • Sunny Days Camp: Kids will be treated to 80 acres of adventure at the Hamburg Fitness Center & Camp in Brighton. Activities include archery, canoeing, fishing, hiking, field hockey, basketball, soccer, swimming (indoors and at the lake), games and crafts. For children ages 6-14; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays June 13-Sept. 2; $120 per week for members, $150 per week for non-members. Other fees may apply.
  • Sweet Apple Ranch Horse Camp: Girls ages 9-16 who like horses will love this camp, held at the Brighton State Recreation Area Riding Stable. Children will practice Western-style riding, trail riding, bareback riding, grooming and showmanship, with fun games and crafts thrown in. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., June 13-Aug. 26; $300 per week.
  • SpringHill Camp: This Christian camp, held at , features awesome activities like a climbing wall, crafts, low ropes, slingshots, water fun, euro-bungee, flying squirrel and silly games. For children K-4th grade; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 8-12; $149.
  • Biome Camp: Your little scientist will love educational camps at . Two-week sessions focus on different biomes of the Earth with activities based on the Montessori method. For children 3 to 10 years old; June 20-Aug. 26; $200-$400 for 2-week sessions.
