Construction Starts This Week on U.S. 23 in Livingston County

Work begins Friday along U.S. 23, with single-lane closures expected through May.

Starting this week, major construction will begin on U.S. 23 near Brighton. The two-year project involves bridge repair, resurfacing 3.6 miles of freeway, and installation of median cable guardrail along the entire length of U.S. 23 in Livingston County.

Work will begin with bridge repairs to the following structures north of I-96: Hyne Road under U.S. 23 and Spencer Road over U.S. 23. This week, crews will set up construction equipment in the work zone and upgrade the shoulders along U.S. 23. Shoulder upgrading is expected to start Friday, with nighttime single-lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning. The nighttime lane closures are expected to be in place for approximately one week.

Once the barrier wall is installed and the shoulder work is complete, there will be a single-lane closure in each direction on U.S. 23, around-the-clock, seven days a week, to accommodate the bridge repairs. Due to the distance between the two bridges, there will be two separate closure locations on U.S. 23. These closures will be in effect until the end of May, prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. No lane closures are allowed on U.S. 23, north of I-96, after May 26.

For local traffic, one lane will be maintained on Spencer Road with a temporary signal, and one lane will be maintained on Hyne Road under flag control.

In addition, preliminary work also will begin soon on Grand River Avenue over U.S. 23, near the I-96 interchange. Lane closures are expected to start in mid-July and will last through September. During construction, one lane will be maintained in each direction on Grand River Avenue.

Intermittent single-lane closures on U.S. 23 south of I-96 also will occur starting this summer. Crews will be doing preliminary work along the highway in preparation for resurfacing U.S. 23 in 2012 between Silver Lake Road and the CSX Railroad, just south of I-96. Other 2012 work includes bridge repair at Silver Lake Road and Lee Road, and median cable guardrail installation.
