Good Morning Brighton

Check out the weather, fuel prices and more for Jan. 18, 2013.

Here are five tidbits of news and information we hope you'll find useful or entertaining.

1. The weather

Today will be mostly cloudy, with wind gusts as high as 24 mph, and a high near 31 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with wind gusts as high as 23 mph, and a low around 27 degrees.

2. Gasoline prices

Here's a quick survey of the lowest per-gallon prices for regular gasoline in the Brighton area as of Thursday night, according to DetroitGasPrices.com via GasBuddy.com:

  • Costco, 6700 Whitmore Lake Rd: $3.17
  • CITGO, 1050 E Grand River: $3.17
  • Mobil, 9925 Spencer Rd: $3.19

3. College A-Capella Night

Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School Choirs will host their first "College A Cappella Night" tonight at 7 p.m. at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will benefit the Brighton Choir Program. The show will feature "The Accafellas" from Michigan State University, "The Harmonettes" from the University of Michigan and "The Ebb and Flow Quartet" from Central Michigan University.  In addition, "Chicappella", the women's a Cappella group from BHS and "Notorious", the men's a Cappella group from BHS will perform.

4. Brighton Optimist Club Essay Contest

The winner will receive a $500 scholarship.  Deadline for entry must be postmarked NO LATER than 1/25/13.  Entry form and details can be found at http://www.BrightonOptimist.org, look under the 'Activities' page. For more info, call Bob Smith at 810-220-1478.

5. On This Day in History

According to History.com, on this day in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sennt a special confidential message to Congress asking for money to fund the journey of Lewis and Clark. Jefferson had been trying to mount a western expedition of exploration since the 1790s, and his determination to do so had only grown since he became president in 1801. In summer 1802, Jefferson began actively preparing for the mission, recruiting his young personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to be its leader.
