Patrick O'Rourke Retroactively Promoted to Sergeant; 2.5-Foot Alligator Found in Waterford Basement

There was a lot of news around Brighton this week.

Here is a list of the top five most interesting stories from the Brighton area this week.

1. The West Bloomfield Township Board unanimously voted to approve a recommendation retroactively promoting Officer Patrick O'Rourke to sergeant, West Bloomfield Patch reported. The promotion effectively increases benefits for O'Rourke's family, including four young children and widow, Amy.

2. Investigators say the fire that destroyed several historic buildings in downtown Byron early Monday morning was arson, NBC 25 reports. State fire officials said the blaze was intentionally started in the apartment above Janelle’s restaurant.

3. Waterford Township police found a 2.5-foot alligator living in the basement of a home where a man was growing marijuana, the Oakland Press said. The man also had four pit bulls, which were taken to a residence in White Lake Township (along with the gator) because Waterford has an ordinance prohibiting pit bull ownership.

4. A Novi police officer shot a sick raccoon on Monday morning after a resident called the police after spotting the raccoon running circles in the roadway, Novi Patch reported.

5. A 48-year-old White Lake woman was arrested for disorderly conduct after a neighbor found the woman crawling across her yard while intoxicated, White Lake Patch reported.
