Brighton Paint Out

This Saturday, downtown Brighton will be the focus of approximately 25 plein air painters from the southeast Michigan area as they compete in the Brighton Paint Out.  En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air," and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

The Brighton Paint Out, is a collaborative effort between the Brighton Art Guild, Brighton Art and Culture Commission and the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce.  Claudia Roblee, the Chair of the Brighton Art and Culture Commission said, “The DIA Inside/Out exhibition which is taking place in Brighton right now is a beautiful addition to the sculptures we have.  A museum without walls is how our city manager describes Brighton.  We wanted to highlight all the great art we have in Brighton right now and we felt it would be exciting for people to see art in action, so to speak.”  The public is welcome to watch the painters create their art.

The plein air artists will be painting scenes of Brighton and will be situated all around downtown.  The artists get to choose which scene of Brighton they would like to paint and get approximately six hours to complete their painting.  The paintings will then go to ArtVentures at 422 W. Main and starting Monday, the 22nd people will be able to vote for their favorite piece.  Then on August 2nd, the paintings will be transferred to a special wine tasting and art tent during the Brighton Art Festival.  The voting will continue until the evening of the 3rd.  On Sunday the 4th the winners will be announced.  The artists are competing for a cash prizes which are dependent on how many artists participate.  Each artist pays a registration fee and that fee will buy them lunch the day they are painting and the rest will go to cash prizes.
