Kroger and Gleaners “Bring Hope to the Table”

Local food drive to support Gleaners will take place at Kroger on Saturday and Sunday.

Kroger and Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners) are partnering to “Bring Hope to the Table,” a major food drive and campaign to ease hunger in southeastern Michigan.

The campaign runs Saturdays and Sundays through the end of January at all Kroger locations, including Hartland and Brighton locations on Jan. 25 and 26.

Customers are encouraged to or purchase special donation scan cards – offered in $2 and $5 increments – at all Kroger registers throughout the month of January.

A $2 donation provides six meals and $5 donation provides 15 meals for children and families at risk of going hungry. One hundred percent of all scan card donations directly benefit Gleaners ongoing efforts to offer emergency food to neighbors in need.

Community volunteers will be on hand at Kroger stores to accept food donations. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase and donate non-perishable food at stores hosting food drives.

“We are extremely grateful to have Kroger as a partner,” said Gleaners President Gerry Brisson. “The need is great every year in the post holiday months. Our area’s recent cold weather will likely cause heating and electrical bill increases, and many in our community will have to choose between paying those bills and buying food for their families. Our Bringing Hope to the Table campaign comes at an important time.”

According to the annual Kids Count Report released in December 2013, Michigan experienced a 53 percent increase in the rate of young children – one in every three (37 percent) – who qualified for federal food assistance between 2005 and 2012.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 million people in America and more than 1 out of 5 children live in a household that lacks adequate food.

On Jan. 25 and 26, residents can donate at the following Kroger locations:

  • 10059 E. Highland Hartland Livingston
  • 9968 E. Grand River Brighton
