If You Thought About It, You Would See You Are Lucky

If you thought about all of the miracles in your day, you would weep with joy and feel very lucky.

If last night you had a good night’s sleep with no pain and no worry, you were lucky

If you awoke this morning, able to quickly put your feet onto the floor, stretch and get up, you were lucky.  And then if were able to walk through your bedroom out to other parts of your house with no real thought, you were  lucky.  You are luckier if you share life as a family member and someone showed you that they were happy to greet you this morning with a good morning reply, smile or a touch.

If you live in a house with stairs and you never even thought about the energy that it takes to ambulate those stairs, or they caused you no problem, you were lucky.

If you were able to think in your mind what sounded good for breakfast and you had those things in your home, you were lucky.

If you could eat those food items, or drink your breakfast beverage without thought of the food value or lack of food value, you were lucky.

If you could choose to go anywhere in the public arena with no fear of having to get to the bathroom quickly, you were lucky.

These are all things that we take for granted each and every day and there are countless more examples of those little miracles in our lives daily.

See, my dad is now living with the fact that cancer lives within him.  There is no cure and the length of time that he has with us depends the strength of his mind and body.

He rarely sleeps well and pain is with him forever.  He awakes each morning wondering how his day will unfold. Food no longer even sounds good as he knows that it goes right through him and the speed at which one can find a bathroom can be an added mental challenge. He loves to see his family members but most of us have stairs and this once very strong and healthy man sees stairs as one of life’s biggest challenges.

Just this weekend he met a new man and they immediately engaged in conversation about sports.  My dad rooted for the LIONS and this other man rooted for the BEARS.

It was a normal conversation between two strangers chatting together for the first time.  Later that new man shared with his son, who shared with me these words, “You know if you didn’t know he had cancer you would have no clue. He is just is an older man and he walks with a little limp.” This other man was in a wheelchair. He also recognizes life’s little miracles.

So as I end, please know that each and every day your life is made up of many miracles. And also, look around you, carefully look at people, there are people all around us facing challenges to the every day miracles that we take for granted.

Stay strong, Dad. You are loved by many.
