71-Year-Old Brighton Woman Runs 5K to End Child Abuse

Ellen Nitz was one of hundreds of runners who participated in Run the Course for Dominick Calhoun on Saturday morning at Kensington Metropark.

71-year-old Ellen Nitz, of Brighton, was among hundreds of runners who braved chilly Saturday morning winds to honor slain child abuse victim Dominick Calhoun in a 5K race at Kensington Metropark in Milford.

Nitz was the oldest participant in the event, and ran the 5K (3.1 miles) in a little more than 27 minutes. Her official time was 27:58.2, according to the score sheets.

Childhelp Michigan, an advocacy group, organized the event along with Dominick's paternal grandfather Rick Calhoun to pay tribute to Dominick and other abuse victims.

Four-year-old Dominick, of Argentine Township, was killed at the hands of his mother's ex-boyfriend. He was among more than 2,284 children in in 2010.
