Brighton Women Invited to Mom Prom

Mom Prom will be on Friday at the American Spirit Center from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

On Friday, women of all ages wearing dresses from all decades will party for a good cause at the Second Annual Mom Prom.

Brighton resident Kristine Stuenkel decided to organize her own Mom Prom after seeing an article about a Canton woman, Betsy Kraft, who came up with the idea.

"At the time I was trying to figure out how I could raise money for our team - we ride in the Tour de Cure for Diabetes," she said. "And I was having trouble because golf outings aren't really my thing and selling things aren't really my thing, so then I saw that article, I thought, that's me for sure. I can do that. And it was a lot of fun."

Stuenkel's Tour de Cure team - Team Mackenzie - rides for her 17-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 6-years-old. They have been raising money for the American Diabetes Association for 11 years now.

Last year's Mom Prom helped raise about $1,000, Stuenkel said.

Brighton resident Kristin Briggs is a friend of the family and participates in Mom Prom.

"Mackenzie and my daughter are very dear friends," Briggs said. "So we try to support her in any event we can. And Kristine is the most amazing person. We love them."

The idea of Mom Prom is that women can wear formal dresses from any decade they want.

"About 100 women came last year," Stuenkel said. "It started at 7 p.m. and people were on the dance floor at 7:15 p.m. I was shocked. There's no need to spike the punch or sneak in your flask - not that any one did that at their prom! You don't have to have a date, so you don't have to worry if your date's a dud or if someone's going to ask you."

The night will include a random drawing for prom court, who will then compete for the honor of Prom Queen. There will also be awards for "Tackiest Dress" and "Most Amazing Hair."

Mom Prom will be held at the from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Tickets cost $30 in advance and are available at or in downtown Brighton. Tickets can only be purchased using cash, but receipts are available upon purchase.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $40. The price includes DJ entertainment, dancing, appetizers, non alcoholic drinks and door prizes. There will also be a cash bar.

100 percent of the profits from Mom Prom are donated to the American Diabetes Association.
