Fundraisers to Help Cover Medical Expenses of Dearborn Woman in Need of Liver Transplant

Melissa Kania, who works with the East Dearborn Downtown Development Authority, needs help covering medical bills for a liver transplant.

A Brighton family is banding together to raise money for a family member's liver transplant.

In 2011, Dearborn resident and Executive Assistant Melissa Kania had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic prescribed to her.

This allergic reaction has caused her to have vanishing bile duct syndrome, and more than a year later, she is in need of a liver transplant.

Though Kania is high on the waiting list, her family and friends are looking to make sure that finances are not a problem as she recovers, and are hosting two fundraisers to help.

Spaghetti Dinner

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held for Kania on June 2 at St. Mary’s School, located at 10601 Dexter-Pinckney Road in Pinckney.

According to the Kania family, “We are looking for you all to join us so that we can get Melissa the medical care she needs as well as help her with any bills that needs to be paid while she is recovering as she does not have insurance to cover those bills nor is she able to get it.”

The dinner will run from 6:15-8 p.m., with live music and drinks continuing until 10:30 p.m. Dinner is a $10 donation, the live music is a $5 donation. Kids ages four and under are admitted free, while kids ages 5-12 are admitted for $5.

A table for eight can be reserved in advance for $75.
