Patch Picks: Top 10 Scariest Movies of All Time

When it comes to horror films, I'm a complete wimp.

Not kidding - I'm totally the girl that squeals and jumps even when you just know the bad guy is going to pop out and kill the character on screen. I often close my eyes, then peek through my fingers as the music crescendos... hence the jumping and squealing.

That being said, it doesn't take much to scare me, but I'd still like to think I'm a pretty good judge at truly terrifying thrillers.

The following list includes my personal picks for the best scary movies of all time.

10. The Ring (2002) – This movie gave me nightmares after watching. Arguably one of the creepiest little girls to grace the big screen.

9. It (1990) – To this day, clowns still give me the creeps. 

8. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – This is a true horror classic. The sequels were awful, but the original was great.

7. Halloween (1978) – What better day than Halloween for a masked killer to run around terrorizing the town folks? 

6.  The Birds (1963) – This is my favorite Hitchcock movie. Let’s face it, birds are everywhere and if they go rogue, we are all in big trouble.

5. Pet Sematary (1989) – I’m not going to lie. I checked under my bed more than once after watching this movie. Sometimes dead is better.

4. The Amityville Horror (1979) – Supposedly based on true events, whether or not you believe the Lutz family’s account of what happened in the Long Island manse, it's hard not to jump at the bumps in the night. The lesson here: never move into a house where a murder occurred. I know, it seems like common sense.

3. The Shining (1980) – "Heeeeere's Johnny!" Jack Nicholson's slow devolution into a snarling, family-murdering psychopath is sublime and horrifying at the same time.

2. Poltergeist (1982) – Steven Spielberg at his best. Even mundane things like a toy clown and a tree become the stuff of nightmares.

1. The Exorcist (1973) – "The Power of Christ compels you!" Classic horror flick about a 12-year-old girl possessed by an evil spirit. Her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her. Good luck trying to sleep after watching this one!
