Weekend Planner: Metroparks' Christmas Appreciation Day, Live Music, Bowling, Blood Drive and Free Christmas Dinner

Here's a look at what's happening around the Brighton area this weekend.

Where: , 8765 Hammel Road, Brighton and Kensington Metropark, 2240 W. Buno Road, Milford

When: all day Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25

Cost: Free 

Why go: Once you're done with dinner (or even before it), you can go on a winter hike at the park to burn off some of those holiday calories. And did we mention it's free?

Where: , 400 E. Grand River Ave., Brighton

When: 11 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23

Cost: No charge; donors receive a light lunch after donating

Why go: Help others by donating blood; it's a critical need, especially during the holidays.

Where: , 9871 E. Grand River Ave., Brighton

When: 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24 and from noon-midnight Sunday, Dec. 25.

Cost: Bowling is $2.50 before 5 p.m. and $3.50 after 5 p.m. Hourly rates are $15 per hour before 5 p.m. and $20 per hour after 5 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a game or two with family or friends and help burn off that holiday feast.

Where: Lu & Carl's Bar & Grill, 100 W. Main St., Brighton

When: 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23

Cost: Free

Where: The Howell American Legion Deveraux Post 141, 3265 W. Grand River Ave., Howell (corner of M-59 and Grand River)

When:  11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25 on-site; delivered meals for shut-ins are scheduled by phone. (You should already have called the American Legion by Tuesday, Dec. 20 to participate.)

Cost: Free

Why go: This is not just for Howell residents; anyone who needs a meal can take part. It’s a great place to go for a filling Christmas meal and company. Can’t get out of the house? No problem; deliveries are available.
