Brighton Resident, Ex-Principal Gets Probation for Drunk Driving

Kim Warren, former principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary, was arrested in April on charges of being intoxicated on school grounds.

After appearing in court Tuesday, former Novi principal Kim Warren was sentenced to 18 months of probation, according to LivingstonDaily.com.

"I have an illness and I'm so sorry for all those people who put their faith in me and I disappointed," she told Fox2 News on Tuesday's evening news.

Warren, of Brighton, was arrested in April under the suspicion of being intoxicated on school grounds at Novi's Deerfield Elementary and was then charged with “super-drunk” charges for registering a .21 percent blood alcohol content, which is more than twice the legal limit. She was on administrative leave until asking the Novi school board in May for permission to resign from her position as principal.

As part of her sentence, Warren must attend a substance abuse treatment program and complete 50 hours of court-supervised community service, LivingstonDaily.com reported. The judge also ordered Warren to attend daily alcohol anonymous or narcotics anonymous, the report said.

The controversy surrounding Warren's arrest caused quite a reaction from the Novi community. Several people thought she should be fired and others thought she needed help.

"The circumstances clearly displayed that this was not a 'drunk on the job' problem! It is good that she was allowed to resign. She is getting professional help, and I hope that she gets her life back together," Patch reader Antonio Sieira said in a comment

Chris Stachura agreed and said Warren must have been a good principal if she was allowed to resign.

"As Antonio said, alcoholism is a disease, but it does not absolve the person of the choices they make. I too wish her well in getting help and hope she makes a good recovery," he said in a comment

When asked on Fox2 News if she thought she'd ever teach again or work in school administration, she responded: "Not unless you know somebody who is going to offer me a job."
