Bicyclist Struck by Car While Biking to Work

55-year-old Daniel Paternoster of Fowlerville is in critical condition.

A 55-year old Fowlerville man is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle this morning, according to a press release from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

Daniel Paternoster was riding his bicycle to work on the southern shoulder of eastbound Grand River in Handy Township Tuesday morning when he was struck from behind by a 2009 Dodge Avenger, driven by a 50-year-old Webberville resident.

Paternoster was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash and was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where he was last listed in critical condition.

Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, though they are investigating distracted driving on the part of the driver.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Fowlerville Area Fire Department and Livingston County EMS. Traffic on Grand River remained open while deputies investigated the scene.

This incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff Department Traffic Safety Bureau.
