Man Shot in Face in Novi New Year's Eve Incident; Pedestrian Killed in Accident in Farmington Hills

Area police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

Man Shot in Face in New Year's Eve Incident in Novi

The Novi Police Department is investigating an incident between two motorists which resulted in gunfire, according to a press release. At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 31, Novi police responded to the Novi Square Plaza, near Pontiac Trail and West Park Drive, on a 911 call stating a vehicle had crashed into the Dollar Tree store.

Upon arrival, officers found a 35-year-old Sterling Heights man suffering from a gunshot wound to the face sitting in his Cadillac Escalade that had crashed into the storefront. Officers also located a 30-year-old Wolverine Lake man near a pickup truck at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates the two men had engaged in a traffic altercation in Wixom, which ended in a confrontation in the Novi Square Plaza where one motorist fired a handgun at the other, striking him in the face. The injured man then crashed his vehicle into the Dollar Tree. Both men were armed with handguns and are properly licensed to carry a concealed pistol.

The wounded Sterling Heights man was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Assaults, Theft Reported on New Year's at Dearborn Hotel

Dearborn police were called to the Adoba Hotel Dearborn/Detroit three separate times in the early hours of New Year's Day, according to police reports.

Several assaults and a theft were reported between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. at the hotel, which hosted its annual Champagne Explosion party that night to ring in the new year.

Just after midnight, a resident of Brownstown who was at the hotel's event called police to report her purse as stolen. The purse, she said, had been sitting unattended on a couch in one of the ballrooms' VIP areas. When she went to receive it, it was gone. The purse contained an iPhone 4, camera, iPad, and her wallet.

At 2:20 a.m., police were called to the hotel by a Taylor resident who—also while attending the party—was reportedly assaulted.

The woman told police that she was in the pool area of the hotel when a group of people, both men and women, "began to argue with her." The argument escalated and, she said, someone hit her in the face.

Police noted bruising on her right eye and a cut on the bridge of her nose. The woman refused medical care and said she didn't want to press charges. Police attempted to find the group, but were unsuccessful, as the woman—who said she had consumed several drinks at the event—could not provide a description of the assailant.

Dearborn police were called to the hotel a third time at 4 a.m. by hotel security, who asked that police evict the the patrons in room 775. The guests—as many as 12 in one room—had reportedly been causing trouble all night, and had started a large fight in the hallway of the seventh floor.

While officers were in the process of evicting them, one man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

A guest from room 776—who had reportedly been part of the fight—was found in the lobby by officers. Police noted that he was clearly intoxicated. The man told police that someone from room 775 had punched him in the mouth, knocking one of his teeth out.

However, police were unable to find a person matching his description, and noted that the man seemed "confused" as to who had actually hit him.

Pedestrian Killed in Accident in Farmington Hills

Farmington Hills Police report a 37-year-old woman was killed at around 6:20 p.m. Friday, after being hit by "oncoming vehicles" while crossing Grand River west of Drake Road. 

The Farmington Observer reported late Saturday night that the victim was identified by police as Kimberly Michelle Williams of Farmington. Her parents are Farmington Hills residents, the newspaper reported. 

In a press release, police said the woman was wearing dark clothing and crossed outside a crosswalk. She died at the scene, and her name is being withheld, pending notification of family members. 

WDIV-TV reports the driver of a west-bound Jeep stopped after striking the woman, and two other vehicles that were headed east also hit her.

Northville Township Man's Property Stolen, Ditched

A Northville Township man’s property was stolen from his silver 2012 Ford Fusion 1:03 a.m. Dec. 28 near the 16000 block of Meade Road, according to a Northville Township police report. Another man found a leather bag containing a laptop on the edge of the road where he was placing his garbage, the report said. That man contacted police, who found a passport for the laptop’s owner, according to the report.
