Police Break Up Possible Drag Racing Location, Remind Public of Dangers

The public is encouraged to contact the Livingston County Sheriff's Department or 911 if they are aware of a drag racing event that is planned or if they witness one occurring.

After receiving several anonymous calls on Saturday night regarding a planned drag racing location, the Livingston County Sheriff's Department responded to the area where they ticketed motorists and broke up crowds of people.

Police say on Nov. 9, they received several calls alerting them to possible illegal drag racing planned for that evening on a closed portion of Nixon Rd., south of Beck Rd. in Genoa Township. After responding the area, deputies cited eight motorists in the area for accessing Nixon Road in violation of the road closure, according to a press release.

Police say at 11:30 p.m. they received another tip informing them that because of the police presence, the drag racing location was moved to Cedar Lake Rd., south of Norton Rd. in Marion Township.

According to the press release, deputies were able to quickly respond to the area and disperse a crowd of approximately twenty people. Police say that the group denied any drag racing was going to take place and no further incidents were reported that evening.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department is reminding those involved that drag racing on a public roadway is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine and/or 93 days in jail. The police are also reminding the public of the safety risk involved in racing on a public roadway at night, coupled with fact that the deer population is actively moving, makes the act of drag racing even more dangerous.
