Police Chase of Hartland Teen Ends with Crash into Trees

Police say alcohol was a factor in a car chase of a 14-year-old Hartland boy.

A 14-year-old boy from Hartland refused to stop for police early this morning when driving a vehicle without tail lights.

Trooper Thomas Pinkerton of the Michigan State Police was the first to attempt to stop the driver of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Clyde Road near Argentine Road.  However, he lost sight of the Jeep, and a Livingston County Sheriff found it about five minutes later. Again, the driver refused to stop, and the sheriff started another chase.

With speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour, the chase traveled from south on Oak Grove Road, west on M-59, and east on I-96, continuing east on Grand River Avenue into South Lyon Township.  The chase ended on Lyon Parkway when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a group of small trees.

The driver and 14-year-old front seat passenger from Howell attempted to run away but were stopped by a chase. They were both lodged in a secure juvenile facility, pending charges from the Livingston County prosecutor’s office.  The three 14 and 15-year-old female passengers from Fenton were turned over to their parents.

Although no other vehicles were damaged during the pursuit and no injuries were reported, alcohol was a factor in this incident, according to the report.
