Services Set for Cullen Finnerty As Friends, Teammates Remember Brighton Grad

Former Brighton football player Cullen Finnerty disappeared while fishing on Sunday evening.

Former Brighton High School football start Cullen Finnerty will be laid to rest Tuesday, June 4, at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Brighton at 11 a.m.

Finnerty, 30, was found dead Tuesday evening near Baldwin, MI.

Police say the former Grand Valley State quarterback was found in the woods about a half mile north of where he disappeared while fishing on the Baldwin River.

Viewing will be Monday at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Brighton from 1-8 p.m.

He is survived by his wife and two young children.

WHMI reports that a cause of death was not determined after an autopsy was performed earlier this week.

According to a Facebook page dedicated to help search for missing people, Finnerty contacted his family by phone Sunday and said he was having what was described as an "episode." He told his family he was scared and then "wandered into the woods."

Former coaches and teammates remembered Finnerty at Grand Valley State University, where he led the Lakers to three National Championships from 2003-2006, according to the Facebook post.

"Laker Nation and the Laker faithful are always going to remember what he did," Curt Anes, a football player from 1998-2002, said. "...He was just a stinking warrior... he wasn't your typical quarterback. In my head, I know that he's gone. But your heart, it doesn't want to accept it."
