Police: Teens Sell Boat to Howell Salvage Company for Cash

The following information was supplied by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Police responded to a larceny call from CEI Group LLC in Genoa Township on Jan. 26, according to a report.

A man told police that his boat was stolen from where it was stored on the property his company rents, the report said.

The man told police that he called Regal Recycling and was told that his boat was brought in that morning. Regal Recycling told the man it did not obtain identification from the suspects because the value of the salvaged boat was less than $100.

However, the boat was worth $2,500, according to the police report.

Regal Recycling was able to give police a description of the suspects and their vehicle and the man was able to pick up his boat from the salvage yard.

Police observed a vehicle that matched the suspect vehicle on Jan. 27 and saw the bed of the truck contained a boat oar, boat battery and a can of spray paint, items that went missing the same time as the boat, the report said.

Police arrested the truck's owner, a 17-year-old Howell teen who said he and a friend, also 17, took the boat from the old Erb Lumber yard because he owed someone money for marijuana and was concerned the person was going to come after him, the report said.

The other teen, who was planning on selling the boat's motor online, was also arrested, according to the report. He told police that he got the motor from the back of his friend's truck.

The two teens were transported to the Livingston County Jail. The stolen property was transported to the Sheriff Department where it was turned over to the owner.
