Brighton Township Manager Resigns

Dan Bishop's official last day with the township will be July 6.

The Brighton Township Board of Trustees will soon be searching for a new township manager now that Dan Bishop has resigned.

Bishop will begin another employment opportunity as the City of Albion manager beginning July 16.

"There's more opportunities and more challenges," Bishop said of his decision to leave Brighton Township. "It's a city versus a township. Number one, they have some financial issues - like most cities in America - but I think they have some economic development opportunities to explore. They have the college there and college towns have a different buzz."

Bishop said that while he is looking forward to his new position in Albion, he will miss the close relationships he had with Brighton Township staff and board members.

Township Supervisor Tom Murphy said the Board of Trustee's next steps are to identify the manager's responsibilities then determine how to handle the hiring process. He said there was no time frame for the hiring process at this time.

"The challenge we have is there will be a new board seated Nov. 20 and it might not be fair to them if we bring someone in that they don't have a say over," Murphy said. "We know for sure there will be at least two new board members. So that's one of the challenges we'll face as a board."

At this point, the township manager's duties will be handled by the township's administration staff, including the supervisor, treasurer, clerk and department heads.

Murphy said an interim manager may also be appointed until a more permanent solution is found.
