On June 8, the SELCRA board of directors approved the 2011-12 budget, which takes over at the beginning of the new fiscal year on July 1.

Genoa Township opted not to participate in SELCRA in 2010-11, which left the organization with a $30,000 shortfall. Smith said last year’s budget had to be amended to include the shortfall, which was paid out of cash reserves.

“We were able to make up some with cost-cutting measures around here,” Smith said. “We’re stable. Everyone has pitched in and we’ve became more fiscally responsible.”

On May 12, Green Oak Township, the Charter Township of Brighton and the City of Brighton held a joint meeting with SELCRA. It was the consensus that the articles of incorporation and respective by-laws be revised to address current member concerns, according to documents from the meeting.

“I’ll be meeting with their attorneys next week, so hopefully we’ll have good news,” Smith said.

“We’re in better shape now than we were a year ago. There are some good things coming down the pipeline, which is nice to see.”

SELCRA plans to launch a new website and registration system on July 1 and Smith said over 40 programs will be available during the month.

“On July 22, we’re going to have a family campout at Huron Meadows,” Smith said. “We’re going to have a climbing wall and we’ll be showing the movie Yogi Bear on an inflatable movie screen. It will be nice for people who want to try camping for the first time. We’ll be camping locally, so if people need to run home for something, they’ll be able to do that. We’ll have kayaking and canoeing.”

SELCRA’s first board meeting of the new fiscal year is July 13.
