Brighton Board of Education Approves Another Technology Donation

200 used computers were donated to the district from Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

The Brighton Board of Education accepted a donation of 200 used computers from Plymouth-Canton Community Schools at its meeting Monday night.

Although they are approximately five years old, they are newer than many computers in the district, said Elson Liu, the director of technology for Brighton Area Schools.

He said the majority of the computers will be used atΒ  in an effort to set one standard model of computers in that building. Liu said most of the district has a mix of models in each of its buildings.

The donation to the district is yet another technology-related one, following for laptops at and iPads at , approved last month by the board.

The computers' model type is the Hewlett Packard dc5000. Plymouth-Canton schools are retiring the computers as part of a routine replacement cycle. Plymouth-Canton Superintendent Jeremy Hughes offered the computers to Brighton.

The board approved the measure 6-1, with Trustee John Conely dissenting. Conely said he would have preferred new computers instead of 5-year-old ones. According to the meeting packet, buying 200 new similar computers would have cost at least $28,000.

The board is meeting again Monday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. at the . The board will consider approval of the contract of the liaison officer from the Brighton Police Department and to extend Brighton Area Schools' shared time services program to Β Lutheran school.

Other action by the board included:

  • Approval to switch the district's utility provider to Executive Energy, due to unspecified cost savings as a result of switching from Michigan Schools Energy Cooperative (MISEC).
  • Approval of the 2011-2012 deficit elimination plan for the district. The district is projecting to whittle its deficit down to $4.6 million at the end of next year from the $7.9 million deficit it carries now.
  • Reviewing the district improvement plan, presented by Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Laura Surrey. The contents of that document are located at the end of the meeting packet.Β
