Brighton High School Among First to Perform 'Legally Blonde: The Musical'

Brighton High School kicked off its theater season Thursday night with the show announcement.

production staff held a season kick off party Thursday night in which they finally revealed the much anticipated secret of which musical production the school would perform to students, parents and community members.

Technical director Josh Holowicki said the students went nuts when staff announced this year's show would be "Legally Blonde: The Musical."

"We chose 'Legally Blonde' in short because it is a fantastic show," Holowicki said. "We typically choose high-energy shows that the audience can connect with. We enjoy shows that have great vocals, exciting dance numbers, and an opportunity to show off the talents of our team. We also only choose shows that the production team enjoys because lets face it... we have to live with every single detail for four plus months, so we better like it!"

The movie "Legally Blonde" was released in theaters in 2001 and starred Reese Witherspoon. The show was introduced as a musical in 2007 and has been running on broadway and on tour. That has restricted the show's use by communities, colleges and high school theaters, according to Holowicki.

The show was taken off restriction Sept. 14 and the production team locked it in. Brighton High School will be among the first high schools in the country to perform the show. Performance dates are scheduled for January.

This is the second year the production staff has kept the show secret until a big reveal at the kick off party, in order to tease the audience and build suspense.

"We use a video to present the show as we have found it to be a powerful way to communicate the show without simply reading it off a note card," Holowicki said. "Plus it buys us six extra minutes of suspense!"
