Brighton High School Goes Pink For Breast Cancer

Week-long activities and events will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Brighton High School Leadership Students are bringing Pink Week back to the district.

The fundraiser to raise money and awareness for breast cancer originally began in 2010, but lapsed last year. This year, Leadership Class is taking it beyond the high school - even beyond the school district and into downtown Brighton. All proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Seniors Shane Neal and Bo Reppen are are two Leadership students working to get Brighton business owners involved in Pink Week. They sent out a letter and visited business owners asking them and their employees to join the district's staff and students in wearing pink on Friday.

"We wanted a bigger event and to get the whole city involved," Neal said. "The more people there, the more money we raise. Plus it will look awesome driving through downtown and seeing everything pink."

Leadership students are also involving local businesses in a raffle for 10 students to win an off-campus lunch. Students will be given Pink Punch Cards at the beginning of the week and must gain at least six punches by visiting one of seven local businesses (no purchasing necessary).

There will also be a silent auction featuring items offered by teachers such as dinner with a teacher or cupcakes once a month baked by Leadership teacher Arnella Park.

The week-long events will cumulate on Friday at the Varsity Football Game during halftime with the Survivor's Walk. Leadership class is inviting any cancer survivor to take the field during the last home game of the season.
