Brighton Schools Plan Parent Nights to Discuss New Everyday Math Curriculum

Brighton Area School Board members adopted Everyday Math in June - the district's first new math curriculum since 1998.

Brighton Area Schools will be hosting Everyday Math Parent Nights in October and November in order to introduce the new curriculum to families and give them an idea about what they can expect with the new program.

Brighton Area School Board members adopted the district's first new math curriculum since 1998 this past June. Several parents spoke out against the board's decision to use Everday Math during a Board of Education meeting because they had heard the program was controversial.

Kim Hubert, Brighton Schools instructional math coach, said the program is a big win for the district because it keeps every grade level consistent on the same lesson plan, using the same assessments and scoring those assessments the same way.

"The program is very high rigour, but the kids love it - it's fun," Hubert said. "They play math games that really reinforce math accuracy. The teachers are enjoying it, the kids are enjoying it and most importantly, they're really learning a lot."

Several Brighton parents commented in favor of the program on Brighton Patch's Facebook page.

Nicole Diamond said she liked the program because it gives her access to information at home.

"No more of the 'I forgot my homework,'" she wrote.

Donna Regalado wrote, "My daughter has never had confidence in math before and is doing great with the program! So we are pleased."

Hubert said the district has been planning these nights in order to help parents support their kids.

"When a parent gets frustrated, it's only because they want to help their kid," she said. "With any new program it's hard for any parent to figure out where it's coming from, what they're (kids) are doing."

The district will hold Everyday Math Parent Nights at all four elementary schools as well as at Maltby Intermediate School so parents can attend at their home school. However, if the date doesn't work out, parents are welcome to attend a different night at a different building. The dates are as follows:

Tuesday, Oct. 16

  • Hornung Elementary, from 7-8 p.m.
  • Spencer Elementary, from 7-8 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 7

  • Hawkins Elementary, from 7-8 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 8

  • Hilton Elementary, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 29

  • Maltby Intermediate, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

A consultant from Everyday Math will be on hand to demonstrate the many online Everyday Math Resources. Topics will include technology resources for home including student logins and passwords, as well as games, computation strategies, fact triangles and more.
