Brighton Superintendent's Contract Gets One Year Extension

Board of Education members voted to extend the contract during its Monday night meeting.

Brighton Area Schools Superintendent Greg Gray will be sticking around through the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Board of Education members unanimously voted to extend his current five year contract another year, effective through June 30, 2017, after a glowing evaluation of his performances in the district.

Board of Education President Cheryl Leach read through Gray's evaluation, in which he was rated superior in all categories: curriculum instruction, community relations, personnel relations, fiscal and facilities management, board relations, professional leadership and goal attainment. Gray's overall performance rating was 3.9 of a 4.0 scale.

One criticism of Gray's performance was that he moves too fast at times.

"Dr. Gray is a leader," Leach said. "As such, he may, at times, get too far out in front of the board and then looks to bring the board along. While this has worked fine until this point, a time may come where he may get caught too far out in front and get caught in the gap."

Board Trustee Miles Vieau said he respects that Gray runs the district like a business.

"Everyone that owns a business knows that you have to be practical, that you have to call a spade a spade no matter what the situation is and you do that," Vieau said. "You don't sugar coat anything. And I think by being that way, things don't get swept under the rug like they have in the past."

Gray said he appreciated all of the feedback, but his success is a team effort starting with the Board of Education and going down the line to the support staff.

"We've had a lot of tough decisions and a lot of things to deal with, but I feel like we're coming out of it and moving in the right direction," he said. "We won't slow down, but we will keep the board with us."
