Brighton Superintendent Says He Couldn't Take More Money

If the school board offers Greg Gray more money to keep his position, he says he won't take it.

A special school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening after Brighton Area Schools Superintendant Greg Gray announced he was a finalist for the superintendent position for the Portage Public School District.

But even if the board offers Gray more money to stay on, he says he won't take it.

“Morally, I could not look myself in the mirror if I took a big pay raise,” Gray told the Press & Argus.

He said in the article that it wouldn't be right after many employees have taken pay cuts.

In March of 2012, Board of Education members unanimously voted to extend Gray's five year contract another year, effective through June 30, 2017, after a glowing evaluation of his performances in the district.

The contract, however, did not include any financial changes and Gray’s $135,000 salary was to remain the same.

In September of 2011, Gray had taken a 7 percent pay cut which reduced his pay from $145,000 to $135,000, according to a previous report.
