Patch Picks: 5 New Books for Kids at Brighton Library

In honor of National Read Across America Day, a local librarian highlights five new books in the Brighton District Library Collection.

Each year, the National Education Association sponsors Read Across America Day, encouraging every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved author Dr. Seuss.

In honor of the event, librarian Carla Sharp, head of the Youth Services Department at the , highlights five new books in BDL's Youth Collection.

  • How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hill. Rocket is minding his own business one fall morning when a little yellow bird gets him hooked on a story she is reading aloud. Picture book.
  • Sports: From Ancient Olympics to the Super Bowl by Liz Miles.
    This book follows the development of sports through the centuries, from ancient times to today. Juvenile non-fiction.
  • The Tilting House by Tom Llewellyn. Brothers Josh and Aaron Peshik are about to discover that their new home with the tilting floors hides many mysteries. Can the kids solve the riddles before time runs out? Juvenile fiction.
  • Bobby the Brave (Sometimes) by Lisa Yee. Dad was a football star before he retired, and Bobby, who doesn't play the game well, worries that Dad thinks he's a loser. But then Bobby's stay-at-home dad struggles, too, and Bobby must decide whether to confront his father or console him. Juvenile fiction.
  • The Night Fairy by Laura Amy Schlitz. Flory is a night fairy who is still becoming accustomed to her beautiful wings when a run-in with a bat drops her into a strange garden unable to fly. Juvenile fiction.
