Brighton Wrestler Aaron Calderon Advances to Championship Round

Junior will wrestle in the 152 pound finals on Saturday against three-time champion Alec Mooradian; two other Bulldogs wrestlers still alive.

AUBURN HILLS – Brighton junior Aaron Calderon looked up to the stands at The Palace of Auburn Hills and smiled.

Calderon had just won a 3-0 decision over Holt senior Jeff Lyon in the semifinals (152 pounds) on Friday night.

With a large group of spectators cheering him on, his first thought after the win was about them.

“There are a lot of people up there supporting me,” he said. “I’ve had my coaches, my parents pushing me every single day. Family, friends, everybody has contributed to my success getting here.”

He now has a chance on Saturday to bring home a state title, but he’ll have to get past three-time state champion Alec Mooradian from Detroit Catholic Central.

“He’s got everything to lose,” Calderon said. “I’ve got nothing to lose.”

The fact that he’ll be a heavy underdog doesn’t faze him. With no pressure, he feels he can go out and just wrestle tomorrow.

By the end of Friday night, Calderon was the only Brighton wrestler left who hadn’t lost a match. Five of the Bulldogs eight qualifiers were eliminated on Friday. Two others are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Junior Jordan Amine lost in the semifinals on a 7-2 decision to Hartland sophomore Austin Eicher. Some luck went senior Evan Hoshaw’s way when he advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket by injury default.

He’ll wrestle Portage Central junior Kevin Haughn on Saturday morning.
